And out of left field comes…

the Killer

the Kidnapper

the Rapist

the Evil Dude Who’s Gonna Destroy the World

I read a book yesterday by a NYT BS author where the kidnapper came out of left field. His “reason” for doing what he’d done was…hmmm, what’s the word for it?

Hang on, I’ll get it….

STUPID! Yeah, that’s it…stupid.

The author couldn’t have one of the three plausible suspects that had been set up thru the entire book be the bad guy. Nope, much better to pick somebody who hadn’t been a suspect (which is okay, that can be done really well and I don’t have a problem with it) and give them a dumbass motivation. Yeah, that makes soooooo much sense.

Made about much sense as the female cop who was kidnapped from a busy parking lot (so busy that the author made a point of telling us that she had to wait forever for a parking spot) and nobody saw a thing.

  1. All I can say is, Yep. That’s right up there with the neat last minute ending. I hate twenty nine chapters of gut wrenching emotional angst being wrapped up neatly in ten pages of chapter 30 – where suddenly the hero and heroine work out all their problems, catch the villain and put him in jail, save the world and start picking out a china pattern. I like my HEAs but I don’t want them to seem like an afterthought that was crammed into the last couple paragraphs.
