Writing Can Be Murder

Lunar eclipse

Filed under: Uncategorized — jenniferelbaum @ 11:29 am

Did you happen to catch the lunar eclipse on Saturday? Very cool but also very annoying because since then I haven’t been able to get Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” out of my jukebox of a brain. Made me wonder if the poor guy who wails, “Turn around” multiple times during the song is pissed he didn’t get more credit for his contribution to the song.

But I’m digressing (what else is new?) the point of this post is the eclipse, or to be more on point, the confession that I love darkness. I am not a sun person. I’m not a light person. If I’m home alone chances are I’m sitting in the dark. I like the dark. I am dark.

I know I’m dark because several times this weekend my DH, with an ever-so-patient shake of his head muttered, “You are so dark.” (I think it was when I laughed after a character on a tv show died that pushed him over the edge.)

I’m constantly censoring how dark my writing is. I write something and give it the “Will that upset DH?” test. If the answer is yes, I sometimes delete/change/soften/lighten the offensive pages. Sometimes though, I just don’t care and I leave them in which often leads to someone saying, “How could you blah, blah, blah?”

Does your writing reflect your personality?

  1. As a rule, I’m sarcastic. I think my writing reflects that, because my heroine’s usually manage to get in a few zingers at the expense of the hero.

Funny, if I’m home alone, all the lights are on. DH complains that I waste electricity but I like things bright. LOL.

  2. I love the light. I picked our flat because it was bright and sunny. But I can appreciate the dark–it’s intriguing. But my writing is more light. And kind of quirky. I’m not quirky at all though–I’m just misunderstood.

I don’t think it’s necessarily dark to find humor in, say, death. It just demonstrates an evolved sense of humor. 🙂

  4. Kate — If I had to pick a single word to describe your writing style I would have chosen “quirky”! Interesting you chose it too.

  5. I only chose it because that’s the word everyone uses to describe it. 😐 Personally, I would described it as sassy with a hint of sophistication, but what do I know?

  6. Don’t worry Kate. You’re sassy and sophisticated too. (Just for the record, I found Kat’s (hope I’m getting the name right, your heroine from Project Daddy) quirkiness to be endearing.)
