Beginnings — Nowhere to Hide

Filed under: Uncategorized — jenniferelbaum @ 4:15 pm

Last night, dh and I were watching the movie The Fountain, or I should say,we started to watch The Fountain. We turned it off after 20 minutes because  neither one of us could figure out what it was about, and we didn’t give a hoot about the characters.

That got me to thinking about how important a beginning is.

Here’s the first paragraph of my novel NOWHERE TO HIDE (read a full excerpt at www.jenniferelbaum.com):

Fifteen years ago…

The shadowy figures crept stealthily down the dimly lit hallway. There were six of them. Three boys and three girls, ranging in age from twelve to nineteen,  clothed identically in black sweatpants, t-shirts,nd sneakers. Some were better at hiding their fear than others, but all of them were afraid…..

I’m curious, how important do you think the beginning of a book is?
